The Master Builders' Association of Western Pennsylvania awarded the 2009 Building Excellence Award to The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, Clinical Services Building for Best New Construction over $10 million. PJ Dick, as part of a joint venture with Barton Malow, provided general construction services for the 900,000 SF Clinical Services Building (CSB) portion of the new Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, the nation’s number seven pediatric hospital. The hospital building, located on a 10-acre campus in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, serves as the centerpiece of the multi-phased 1.5 million SF development. The 9-story Clinical Services Building features 262-licensed private room, including 79 critical care beds, a 41-bed Emergency Room and Trauma Center, and 13 Operating Suites.

The 20,000 SF Resource Center is the largest family resource center of any pediatric hospital in the world and includes an atrium designed to feature movies and large group activities. Other features include a chapel, library, sixth floor rooftop healing garden, and business center for working parents. The state-of-the-art facility utilizes breakthrough technology and will be among the first fully digital hospitals in the country. The new Children’s Hospital is designed as a “green” campus. The Clinical Services Building is one of two buildings on the campus seeking LEED Certification by the USGBC.
